Just plug it in and electronic conditioning breaks the bond between calcium (or magnesium) ions and water molecules. Instead the calcium carbonate ions bond to each other, forming aragonite particles that remain suspended in the water, instead of sticking to heated surfaces and growing into hardened calcite.
